At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written in the clerical hand of C. Christensen, Lieutenant Colonel and Assistant Adjutant General of the Military Division of West Mississippi. Marked as a true copy. "Cipher" is written at the top. Sherman, commander of the Military Division of the Mississippi, reports that Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard has left Georgia and shifted to Florence, Alabama, threatening to invade Tennessee. Informs Canby, commander of the Military Division of West Mississippi, "We are already for him there and I have still an army with which to go on- I have destroyed Atlanta and marched south- Be prepared with boats to send me supplies from Ponchartrain and have the navy look out for my fire and pocket signals along the east shore of Mobile Bay or high up as old Blakely..."
