At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Signed as governor. Planning to retaliate with militia for the murder of frontier settlers by British-backed Indians. "We have been too long diverted by humanity from enforcing good behavior by severe chastisement. Savages are to be curbed by fear only." Page three has severe losses to text at the right edge in the middle of the page.
