At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Instructs the recipient to direct future correspondence by way of New Orleans. Predicts a separation between the Northern and Southern Presbyterian church and a separation in the Methodist church. Writes, "I really think the union cannot hang together long..." Discusses disunion and instructs the recipient to "tend your Ballot Boxes." Mentions items lost during shipment. Contains a postscript including financial information.
