At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

President Grant asks former General Franz Sigel to be Secretary of the Commission to Santo Domingo. In 1869 the Senate refused to approve a treaty annexing Santo Domingo, but in his 1870 message to Congress, Grant reopened the issue. The House authorized him to form a commission to investigate the issue further. He tells Sigel to respond by telegraph if he accepts. Says a naval ship will await the commission at Norfolk, Virginia. On Executive Mansion stationary.
