Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Consists of the top half of the front page of Harpers, volume 7, number 340. Lead article expresses thanks to James K. Magie for supplying a sketch of the execution of two Confederate spies, Williams and Peters (sketch not included). Includes an accout of the incident from a letter written by the surgeon of the 85th Indiana regiment.
