At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Hartsuff reports his arrival at Fort Fetterman from Laramie, Wyoming (a journey of about one week through bad weather). On arrival at Fetterman, Hartsuff reports that he was attached to the staff of General Crook as Medical Director and that the company, augmented by three hundred Crows, left Fetterman on 1876/5/29 with only the barest of provisions: "Officers have by order only one robe and two blankets, no table, no chair - in fact nothing except a bag or valise."
