At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

General scott is seated in uniform, resting his right forearm on a small table, and holding his sword by its sheath in his left hand. Imprint on recto "Lieut. Gen. Winfield Scott. Entered, according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862, by Chas. D. Fredricks & Co., in the Clerk's Office in the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York." Photographers imprint on verso: "This picture of Lieut. Gen. Winfield Scott was made at West Point, NY, June 10, 1862. The subscribers claim that, for correctness of portraiture, finish and detail, it is pre-eminently the best portrait of the Great American Military Chieftan. Chas. D. Fredricks & Co. 587 Broadway, New York."
