Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Thin purple border on recto. Soldier is wearing a forage hat and a checkered vest, with his right hand holding his lapel. Photographers imprint on verso: "Knowlton's Photograph Gallery, Main St., Woburn, Next door South of the Central House. Particular attention paid to copying Ambrotypes or Daguerrotypes into Photographs of any size. A Variety of Frames constantly on hand."
