Foster's fatigue cap bears brass the insignia of two stars and U.S., surrounded by laurel wreath. Imprint on recto "Brady, New York." Graphite inscription on verso "120." Ink inscription on verso "John G Foster major General Vols. and Major Engineers U.S.A." "1864." Photographers imprint on verso: "Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries, Broadway & Tenth Street, New York, & No 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington D.C."
