Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Felt hat lies on table to his right. Imprint on recto "Gen. Silas Casey. Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862, by Jas. E. McClees, & R.W. Addis, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania." Graphite inscription on verso "Gen Silas Casey 1862." Photographers imprint on verso: "J. E. McClees, Artist, 910 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia."
