At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Complete title "Sketches of Camp Boone the First encampment of the Kentucky State Guard; held near Louisville, From August 23d to August 30th, 1860. Also, Photographic views of the Camp, and Portraits of the General Staff." Photographs of the nine staff members of the Kentucky State Guard appear on page 5, followed by a description of the formation and duties of the Kentucky State Militia on pages 7 - 12. Pages 13 through 17 contains a complete list of officers in the state militia. The day by day operations of the first encampment, namely August 23rd through 30th are detailed following the officers list. Finally, eleven photographs of the encampment are found, capturing views of the eight day event.
