At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a vignetted photo of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. He is wearing a suit and looking directly at the camera. Inscriptions on recto: "Photo on wood 1 1/2 Col but don't engrave until ordener 2 3/4 in" and " C. M. Bell, Washington, D.C." Inscriptions on verso: "Genl Jos. E. Johnston" and " C.M. Bell Artist 459, 461, 463 & 465 Penn Avenue. Washington, D.C. Negatives preserved."
