At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a soldier standing behind a cannon looking out of Fort Monroe. Three soldiers are seated on the ground and a fifth stands to the side. Inscription on verso: "Fort Monroe Va Parapet." Numeric notations on verso: "833" and "102." Written at Fort Monroe.
