At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image looks down on a dismantled cannon inside fortifications. The cannon lies in three pieces and there is a stack of cannonballs in the corner. One man stands just inside the fortifications, another just above. Inscription on verso: "Gardner." Numeric notations on verso: "1239" and "XXII."
