At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A view from across a dirt street of the post office in Washington D.C. Across the dirt streets, leading from brick sidewalk to brick sidewalk are stone crosswalks. The post office is constructed in a Georgian manner, on a street reminiscent of London. Inscription on verso: "Post Office Wash 1865." Numeric notation on verso: "164."
