Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Taken by Gardner. The image shows a long line of Confederate dead starting in the center foreground and continuing off into the background in a wide arc. Frassantio believes the location to be near the Mumma farm. Graphite numeric notation, "49" in upper right corner. Formerly part of H.W. Fay's (keeper of Lincoln's tomb) scrapbook.
