At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The image shows a large house with a fence leading off from either side. Most of the men seem to be on the left, while the women are in a group on the right. Two men stand in the foreground, one on each side, facing each other. The man on the right carries a book. There are two more people on the porch of the house and two leaning out a second story window. Inscription on verso is illegible. Rips in the image have been repaired with tape. Numeric notation on verso: "no 9."
