At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Title taken from inscription on recto. The Orange and Alexandria railroad bridge on the right is of military construction and was constructed using prefabricated segments known as "shad-belly" trusses. A soldier stands on the left bank and another sits on a tree bent out over the water. Three soldiers stand on the opposite side. A two-story block house stands guard on the hill on the right side of the image. Inscription on verso: "Faux."
