Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of a tent of the Assistant Quartermaster Captain J. B. Howard, Army of the Potomac. Graphite inscription on verso: "Camp of 3rd Corps in Culpepper. Capt Howard AQM and aids, clerks &c. John Henry in the foreground. Capt Furey on the left in profile." Shows 9 Union soldiers, two civilians in light colored frocks [possibly photography assistants], and one African-American man posed in front of tent. A flag flies in front of the tent. A sign attached to the flag pole reads: "Office of Assistant Quartermaster."
