At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the Union encampment on Hilton Head Island, SC. Accompanying text reads: "From top of Signal Station, Looking South, Showing all between Hospital and Signal Station." Railroad tracks run down the center of the image with several spur lines branching out on both sides. There are buildings near the spur lines. Also several rows of artillery gun barrels and other pieces of equipment are lined up to the left of the center track. Tents appear in right background. Note that the photograph's mount has been trimmed and the original identification tag has been adhered to the image. Pencil inscription on verso: "G of 62 p.101."
