Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the U.S.S. Hartford. Graphite inscription on recto: "U. S. S. S. [sic] Hartford. 1864. Mobile Bay." Cancelled, red five cent "playing card" stamp on verso. Three mast sailing vessel that also has a steam stack in the center of the ship. The Hartford, a first-class sloop, was the flagship of Admiral Farragut's fleet.
