At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Print of a photograph by Gardner showing Major General W.H. French and his staff in a grove of trees. Inscription on verso: "W. H. French & Staff, Culpepper Sept. 1863." "XXIV" "501." French was mustered out of service in May 1864 when his 3rd Corps was amalgamated into the 2nd Corps.
