At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A print of a photograph of the encampment of the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on December 25th, 1863, while wintering at Brandy Station, VA. Title taken from inscription on recto. Snow covers much of the ground. To the left are the officers A-framed tents, the enlisted mens dog-tents in the center, and "Sibley" tents for officers or quatermasters on the left. The 44th New York was also called the "Ellsworth Avengers." Also written on front is "5024," "Vol. IX," and "Fowx." On rear is "1 pool 50%," "IX," "147," and "19." Also stamped is "Art Department, The Century Co., 33 East 17th St., New York City."
