At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One photograph entitled, "Incidents of the War. Ruins of Stone Bridge, Bull Run," taken by Alexander Gardner dated March 1862. This page was taken from "Gardner's Photographic Sketch Book of the Civil War." Image is of debris from bridge lying in the Bull Run creek below. A copse of trees and a snake-rail fence visible in the background. See GLC 5111.01.0802 for a view of the bridge's foundation before it was destroyed and GLC 5111.01.0562 for another view of the ruins of the bridge.
