At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One undated photograph entitled, "Practice Ship Constellation," printed by Bachrach & Chase. Image is of the U.S.S. Constellation which was the last Civil War vessel afloat, that launched August 26, 1854 and was the last all-sail warship built by the U.S. Navy.
