Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Introduces the self-described "largest paper printed at Fort Laramie" with the goal of keeping "our friends and fellow exiles, up with the spirit of the age" and promoting political and religious principles. Introduces the four editors. Contains a letter from R. Jones, the commanding officer of the Minnesota Territory, about the war between the Sioux and the Brulees. Contains other local news items.
