Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Discusses Union victory by De Courcy's brigade on 6 August 1862. "It is rumored that Kentucky is to be invaded." Written to Johnson as Military Governor of Tennessee.

George Morgan was a Union general. Later served as Ohio Congressman.
John De Courcy was an Irish nobleman, the thirty-first Baron Kingsale, who served as a colonel in the Union army.
