At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Badeau, captain and aide-de-camp, writes to Thomas, United States Adjutant General. Writes, "I have the honor to report my continued presence in Washington City, awaiting orders for the field, with Brig Gen T. W. Sherman, to whom I was reassigned by the Secretary of War. Includes his address. Includes a note written by Edward Davis Townsend, Assistant Adjutant General, 11 August 1862. Townsend states that Badeau will report to General Thomas Sherman, from whose staff he has not been properly relieved.
