At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports on nearby Union movements, and a reported advance "upon the Independence road, between Independence & Colemansville." Addressed to "Genl," most likely for Braxton Bragg since he was in charge of the Kentucky campaign, and because the docket mirrors those on other letters sent to Bragg. At the time the Confederate invasion of Kentucky was going successfully, as they successfully pushed further into the state.
