Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Shows Bates standing amongst a group of chiefs of the two tribes. Several are wearing peace medals. Printed at bottom of backer board are the names of the Head Chiefs of the Pawnee Nation: Eagle Chief, Knife Chief, Brave Chief, and Young Chief. Also printed are the Head Chiefs of the Sioux Nation: American Horse, Rockey Bear, Long Wolf, and Flies Above. Stamped on back, "Anderson, Photographer, 785 Broadway, cor. of 10th, New York."
