At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Encloses a letter from General William T. Sherman (see GLC04492.01). Relays that the first part of the letter reviews Sherman's services in the army. States that the remainder deals with General William Babcock Hazen, of whom McLean apparently asked for an opinion of his conduct and character. In the referenced letter, Sherman highly praises Hazen.
