At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Monteil justifies the actions he has taken during his argument with Comte de Grasse. Complains about de Grasse's actions, especially at the Battle of Virginia Capes. Written on board the Ardent, the ship onto which Monteil was demoted, in the "Canal de Ste. Lucie." St. Lucie was the French name for St. Lucia.
