At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Concerning subtenants using slaves on property given to his father in recognition for his Revolutionary War service. Working the slaves is a violation of a provision prohibiting the use of slave labor. He assures the recipient that the violation will be corrected. Marked "Confidential." Docket states the letter was received 31 August 1847, so written before then.
