At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

He is delighted to receive the letter and hopes to communicate more in the future. He reports conditions of famine, sickness, and waste and efforts to provide subsistence through public works, limited to certain numbers from each family. He updates news on the family, including marriages and deaths, including all his cousin's sisters.
