At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Chamberlain, Colonel of the 20th Regiment, Maine Volunteers, reports his address as Brunswick, Maine to Thomas, Adjutant General, United States. Encloses a required certificate from his surgeon (not included). Writes, "On the 29th of July 1863 I was ordered to report for medical treatment & surgeon R. O. Abbott USA at Washington, upon whose certificate of disability I had leave of absence for fifteen days dated Aug 4th 1863." Is incapable of joining his regiment.
