Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The two plates, frontispiece and pictorial title are engraved by Childs after F.O.C. Darley and printed by C.A. Alvord. Inscribed with "Dr. O'Callaghan, with respects of F. Parkman Jr."

Also published under the titles: The California and Oregon trail (1849, multiple editions) and The Oregon trail (1892). Darley was an American illustrator.
