At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

The first letter, which spans pages 1 and 2, is dated 7 March 1774.
The second letter, which spans pages 3-6, is dated 30 March 1774.
The third letter, which spans pages 6-9, is dated 17 May 1774.
The fourth letter, which is on page 9, is dated 2 April 1774.
The fifth letter, which spans pages 10-12, is dated 15 April 1774.
