At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Poses an introduction for Philip Barton Key, who is looking to advance in the law profession in Washington, D.C. Key was the son of the late Francis Scott Key, Taney's brother-in-law. Asks Mason to procure Key an appointment as a judge advocate to some of the naval court martials. Stresses Key's competence and recommends him highly.
