At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Reports the results of a meeting with Secretary of War Stanton, "who...will return to the Trustees their own building now in control of the Surgeon General." Lincoln is referring to a Washington, D.C. school house that the War Department took control of to convert into a Medical Museum. Written on Executive Mansion stationary.
