At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Commander Rockwell of the USS "Yantic" to Rear Admiral Walker. Marked "Personal." Regrets that the "direction of Active Affairs in the Navy has passed out of your hands." Says he is about to embark on the cruise Walker arranged for him and wants to thank him. Says that "you will be followed by a measure of affectionate esteem and friendship, not awarded to any other officer in the service." Trusts he will live to see Walker promoted to Vice Admiral and Admiral. Has stamp, in purple ink, on recto that says "U.S.S. Yantic Nov 1 1889." Written at the Navy Yard.
