At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

re: Cranor discusses the restlessness and anxiety of soldiers under fire but not engaged in any battles. He points out that the soldiers are still performing their duties however, even if they are playing cards. He expresses hope that he won't have to drill now that his regiment is fighting more frequently.
