At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Expresses his disappointment at Cripps canceling his plans to visit. Describes what the two of them would have done if Cripps came to visit. Written on personal stationery with a "B" imprinted at the top center of page one and on the envelope. Includes a 3 cent stamp depicting George Washington. Postmarked by hand in Rippon, Virginia, 4 April. Possibly written by Mr. Benedict of GLC03587.32 and .34.
