At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his wife that he misses her and would like to see his family, friends, and neighbors. Comments that he does not want to see one particular family who has been telling lies about him and his family. Writes that he expects to stay in Louisville, Kentucky for another 100 days and wants her to write him immediately.
