Written at camp near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He writes that while he was sewing a letter from her arrived and he was then ordered to go on picket duty. Thinks that her letter writing has improved and that she writes her letters "naturally" as if she were speaking to him. Explains that the troops are very happy when they receive letters because it feels like they are still at home with their loved ones. He is glad that she enjoyed the flowers he sent her. Wonder what Laura thinks of the flowers he picked for her. Gives her his permission to go through his trunk looking for old letters. Writes about some of the interesting letters he has in his trunk that she will find. She will also find some "keepsakes" in there from his parents and other family members. Tonight there was much rejoicing over the rumored capture of Charleston, South Carolina. There has been much work done to fortify the camp from clearing trees to creating a palisade, leveling roads and pulling stumps. He thinks that the army will remain in its present location for some time. There is little leisure time between picket duty and working on the camp's fortifications. Writes that the new captain has been very kind to him, especially during his sickness.
