At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by McSherry as Assistant Surgeon aboard the USS "Vandalia" to Welles as Secretary of Navy. Marked "Copy" at bottom. Acknowledges receiving Welles's order of 30 November 1861 to proceed to Philadelphia and to report to Commodore Pendergast for duty on board the "USS Sciota," a steam gunboat. Written at the Navy Yard.
