At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written by Richard to his son Henry. Says they "have been looking anxiously for a letter from you ever since the communication was opened." Reports Anna has written several times. Says he has received letters from Richard and Eliza but not him. Says there is much sickness among the children of the area. Has water damage.
