At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written from Camp near Balls Cross Roads, Virginia. Receipt of payment for $45.00 for the sale of Morey's jacket, pants and vest, "the property of the late Capt. CC Morey," sold to D. C. Dunham. On the verso a brief biography of Captain Ballou is written by Captain [Proety] of Company B.
