At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Written to his father from a camp near Petersburg on two sheets of paper: the first apparently written in the morning and the second sheet in the afternoon. Mentions receipt of $50 previously requested. Discusses his readiness for a six day march. Reports that Alexander H. Stevens "Vice President of the so called Southern Confederacy came within our lines yesterday."
