At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Writes to his wife that he is discouraged to hear of all the troubles at home. He comments that his grandfather has worked hard and that it is up to the younger generation to make sure he has all of his wants supplied. States that he is saddened by the fact that their baby is sick. Tells his wife that he has arranged for her to visit him at the camp. He believes that the journey and change of climate will help her with her health. Instructs her to leave the baby with his mother. Writes about the "grand sights" she will see at the camp. He lists some of the people they know from Michigan who he has seen at the camp.
