Our Collection

At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Informs his wife that he has arrived in Baltimore. Notes that most of the people passed along the way received them warmly. He does note a few exceptions where this was not so. He states that if he dies in battle he fell for a "noble cause." Sends his regards to his mother and friends.
